Date: 11/08/09
Location: Nags Head, NC
Setting:

Urban

Size: 1,820
Weather:

sunny, 60 up to 70's, breezes

54 partly cloudy with breezes 5-10mph, low humidity

Sunny, 60's, a little breezy but not too much.

Surface:

asphalt, a few miles of trail

Terrain:
1-totally flat
10-very hilly

2 - one 82 ft bridge hill

some small hills on soft woodland trail and a hill on the highway 84 ft.

asphalt and 3miles of soft trails

Course:

flat and fast

fast course, the asphalt highway on the second half was a challange (running next to moving traffic)

This was my first marathon, so nothing to compare it to... but since it was mostly flat, I would think it's typically a pretty fast course. The only limitation might be the wind, since it's right on the ocean. This year, the wind was not an issue.

Almost completely flat. There were some rolling hills in the trail section and one "hill" which was going across the bridge at mile 23.

Mostly pavement but had a several mile section of trail (party sandy, party mulch).

Quality of Event:
1-poorly organized
10-very well organized

Comments:

I loved the pirate theme. The medal has a skull and cross bones with AHRRRRRRRRRRRRRG on the ribon. Of course there were many pirates running the race. During boring parts of the course "Berma Shave" like signs with facts and jokes were a great diversion. Wonderful support from the locals.

I hope I can do it again in the future. I made it a beach weekend and really enjoyed myself. The post marathon party was fun. The best part is after you cross the finish line you can walk right into the ocean to cool down.

well organized and easy...this was a small marathon

smoothly organized

long sleeve wicking shirt, great medal with pirate theme, big crowd for a small marathon

I had a great experience this year! Was somewhat frustrated when my hip pain began, but I think I handled the injury much better than last year's hamstring strain -- I went to Mark, followed his instructions, he got me right in to see Dr. Wilder when the pain wasn't improving, and after that, I took it easy on myself and didn't stress about not running what was on my program originally. I was happy with the race experience, and despite not quite meeting my goal time, I'm satisfied with my time being under 4 hours. It's been 6 days since the race, and my hip is feeling fine! I would definitely recommend this race to others.

Was slightly disappointed at packet pick-up/the expo, because they ran out of the size of shirt I had requested and could only offer me a (Men's) Medium. Also, I like to see races that offer both Men's and Women's sized shirts. I wear a W's XS to S, so even the M's S is like a nightgown! Other than that, the race itself was very well organized -- they had shuttles for participants and spectators, bag check, Hammer gels & water/Gatorade on course, post-race party w/live music, beer garden.
